A Recently Discovered Letter from God

I found this in the back of one of my sister’s old Bibles…and I love it.

Ben.

My Child,
You may not know me, but I know everything about you. I when you sit down and when you rise up. I am familiar with all your ways, even the very hairs on your head are numbered. For YOU were made in My image. In me you live and move and have your being for you are my offspring. I knew you even before you were conceived, I chose YOU when I planned creation. You were not a mistake for all your days are written in my book. I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. I knit you together in your mother’s womb and brought you forth on the day you were born.

I have been misrepresented by those who don’t know me. I am not distant and angry but am the complete expression of love and it is my desire to lavish my love on you simply because you are my child and I am your father. I offer you more than your earthly father ever could, for I am the perfect father. Every good gift that you receive comes from my hand, for I am your provider and I meet all your needs. My plan for your future has always been filled with hope because I love you with and everlasting love. My thoughts towards you are countless as the sand on the seashore, and I rejoice over you with singing. I will never stop doing good to you. for you are my treasured possession, I desire to establish you with all my heart and all my soul. For it is I who gave you those desires. I am able to do more for you then you could possible imagine. I am the greatest encourager. I am also the father who comforts you in all your troubles. When you are broken hearted, I am close to you. As a shepherd carries a lamb I have carried you close to my heart.

One day I will wipe away every tear from your eyes and I will take away all the pain you have suffered on this earth. I am your father and I love you even as I love my son Jesus. For in Jesus my love for you is revealed. He is the exact representation of my being, and He came to demonstrate that I am for you not against you, and to tell you that I am not counting your sins.

Jesus died so that you and I could be reconciled. His death was the ultimate expression of my love for you. I gave you everything I loved that I might gain your love. If you receive the gift of my son Jesus, you receive me and nothing will ever separate you from my love again. Come home and I’ll throw the biggest party heaven has ever seen. I have always been Father and will always be Father.

My question is…will you be My child? I am waiting for you…

Love your Dad,
The Almighty and only God.

Take the Christ-follower quiz

Maybe you’re a Christian, but that doesn’t mean you’re a Christ-follower.
Christians follow the religion of Christianity.
Christians have killed in the name of Jesus.
Christians rape women in the sex trade.
Christians lie, cheat, steal, and murder.
Christians get drunk.
Christians sleep around and fool around and don’t care.
Christians form gay churches to embrace their collective lifestyle.
Christians need to meet Jesus and get saved from themselves and their religion.

I sure need it.

Christ-followers chase after a living Saviour.
Christ-followers give up their lives for others.
Christ-followers protect and love women like sisters.
Christ-followers are honest, not greedy, and do not hate.
Christ-followers live level-headed and in control.
Christ-followers don’t mess around and break hearts.
Christ-followers accept people unconditionally, but refuse to accept their sin.
Christ-followers have a deeply fulfilling relationship with the God of heaven and earth.

Take the Christ-follower quiz:
If you call yourself a Christ-follower, answer these questions very honestly.  Then ask them to Jesus, and see what he says to you:

Does my life look like that of Jesus?

Are people getting closer to Jesus because of being around me?

Am I getting closer to Jesus?

Is Jesus taking over my life? Have I surrendered everything (time, money, plans, talents) to His control?

Am I trusting Him to help me overcome my sin- and then working with the Spirit to actually change?

Does my life line up with what the Bible says a Christ-follower should look like? Am I constantly engaged in Scripture to find out?

Is the world being changed and drawn to Jesus because I know and am doing God’s will?

It’s not too late for you to stop being a Christian and start being a Christ-follower.

Jay

I didn’t know it was so black and white. Christ followers don’t struggle with homosexuality, don’t welcome homosexuals into their churches, don’t steal, cheat, lie, murder etc. while they in fact live perfect, loving lives… I know this is not the point you meant to make, but it will come across like this to anybody who is not a Christian. Christ-following can’t be summed up so easily. As a Christian, i am offended, if i was not a Christian i would be mortified! PS to distinguish between Christ-following and Christians is quite strange, considering they both have the name of Christ. I bear them both.

  2. Mike Says:

“Christ-followers accept people unconditionally, but refuse to accept their sin.”

Putting aside the oxymoronic nature of this claim amidst all of the other generalizations that you’ve so casually asserted as truth with this recent post, I find myself compelled to ask a few questions– I hope you’ll oblige. How is it that, according to you, Christian theologians and “biblical scholars” over the past two thousand years have misinterpreted Christianity, or at least, misrepresented it, so monumentally?

To put it another way: How do you reckon that the collective Christian church and its community has so detrimentally distorted Jesus’ teachings on such a widespread level? What exactly do you think they have done so wrong and what are you doing so right? They are basing their sermons and moral cores upon the Bible, just as you do, I’m sure.

And through this comes the real question: By what right do you claim to have the enlightened understanding of Jesus Christ, or of God and His will? I find it interesting that you claim to hold the “real truth” in your grasp, and by saying so you imply that the authorities of the Christian faith down the line of history were wholly misguided and just plain wrong on so many counts. I’m very curious how you’ve come to these conclusions and display them with such conviction.

Anyway, it seems as if you are attempting to write off only the “title” of Christianity by simply lumping all of the evil or “unfavorable” acts done by the church and its followers over the years into that category, and retaining all of the “good” under a new name— “Christ-followers”. This is hardly a reinvention; this is nothing but a superficial change of the label by which you indentify yourself. This should be very, very obvious at this point, but clearly this attempt at a new movement would run into precisely the same problems that Christianity does. Why would it be any different? I fail to see the point of this, Jay. It seems clear that a “Christ-follower” is simply a Christian who follows the rules. You walk a slippery slope when you being to label eachother “true Christians” or vice versa, which is essentially what you are trying to do.

This would only serve to divide, just as all religion inherently does.

I am an atheist and still I felt compelled to comment on this idea of adding yet another “denominational ideology” to the gargantuan, reeking pile that already exists– even if the “Christ-follower” idea is unofficial. Your beliefs are profoundly divisive enough as it is, Jay. There is no need to add fuel to the fire of denominational/religious bigotry.

  3. Jay Brock Says:

    Mike…

Hardly an oxymoron unless you assume that a human IS sin. Two seperate issues. My wife loves me, but she would be allowed to hate the fact that I was cheating on her. I love one of the guys at work, but hate his racism.

We’ve misrepresented because we’re humans who’ve allowed foolishness and self-centredness to cloud our thinking. I’ve been guilty on this one.

My beliefs are based on Scripture, prayed through, and discussed in community for the sake of accountability. It’s the best safeguard I know.

I have no rights. But the Bible teaches that we CAN have the same mind as that of Christ Jesus. That’s my highest pursuit- to know and do his will.

I hope the title of ‘Christianity’ will someday be redeemed. The same can be said of any belief that has been claimed by zealots. Labels mean little if not backed up with action. Truth is- those who murdered Muslims in the crusades didn’t know or love Jesus, despite the name they carried. I’d rather carry his cross.

I hold no denomination. I claim no religion. I believe that Jesus is God and he knows the best way for me to live, and so I will spend my life in pursuit of the way.

  4. Jay Brock Says:

    Joe…

Lol…it’s always interesting to hear how people interpret what I say. Thanks for speaking up about my apparent miscommunication.

If someone was truly following Christ, they’d be surrendering ALL their sin habits to Jesus and winning the battle with the power of the Holy Spirit.

We agree that we’re not perfect, so why be offended? The goal is to look more like Jesus ever day.

There are 100s of men right now, as we speak, raping women in the sex trade, wearing crosses around their necks. They are taking the Lord’s name…in vain. (I guess that’s my point- if you claim Christ, live like Christ. :)

I’m glad you bear them both- may our lives truly bear witness to the name we carry.

Small action, big reaction

tears

“There are tears from the saints
For the lost and unsaved
We’re crying for them come back home.”

These are lyrics by a band by the name of Leeland. These lyrics broke my heart when I really heard the words. God convicted me, saying, “Are your actions bringing people to Jesus?”

How desparate are you to bringing people closer to God? There are too many churches and ministries with such a small Christian circle that there isn’t any focus on the outside world. I love what Newspring Church of South Carolina uses as their slogan … “Bringing people closer to Jesus, one life at a time”.

So I challenge you as God challenged me … cry out for the unsaved. Try different things to bring others closer to God and to seeing how He changed your life. Use your story, or ask for prayer requests. You can use any small action to display compassion for other people.

You never know; small actions may lead to bigger reactions.

Lights Out

light

You’re up north at a cottage. It’s beautiful because there is no one around. You decided to get away by yourself, completely alone. You could use the time to focus, gather, recover, learn, and listen. It’s the first night. Comfortably lazing about. Maybe reading. The normal noises from bugs and animals coming in through the screen. You’re reading.

The light flickers. And goes out. You’re alone. At the cottage. Lights out.

There is this book called “John”. Weird title, I know. Now you might think it would be about a guy named John. Incorrect. It’s just the author’s name. But it’s about another dude. Even though it’s named “John”.  Anyways, I was saying it’s about another guy.

This other guy (the book tells us) lived, died, and he lives again. He wasn’t reincarnated. He didn’t just live on “spiritually”. It wasn’t just his wise words and sayings that lived on. It says he literally lives. He walked out of his own tomb. Out of the darkness. Out of “lights out”. Pretty impressive credentials.

He’s seen by hundreds of people alive again. He lets people feel him, his scars. And he does what most of us do. He heads towards his friends. Maybe we’re not so different from this guy?

He ends up in this fishing town where his best friends are. He sits down with this guy Peter. They’ve only talked twice since he’s come back to life and probably not alone until now.

He says to Peter when you were young you took care of yourself and went where you wanted to go but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and you will go where you do not want to go.

Lights out. Why do you think we feel that kind of primal fear when we lose something like power or a light? It’s unknown. Uncontrollable. We like our control, don’t we?

We’re so used to it. We’re addicted to it. It’s “my life”. There might only be one lyric I like by Nickel back. But it’s brilliant. “Each days a gift, and not a given right”.

Don’t believe the mantra. “It’s my life”. You are hopelessly connected to thousands and millions of other. Some individuals have so much control over you that it’s just a button’s press away from ending it. Or the control you’ve lost is just a “click” away. Or just a bottle away. Or a cha-ching paycheque away.

Jesus, remember, the guy with a pretty sweet credentials? He tells his best friend- “You’re going to need to give up the control”. “God has a life for you to live”. “You Can’t Do It Alone!”. “You need me”.

I need him.

Admitting need is never weakness. It’s wisdom and strength bound together.

Be wise. Be strong.

Men Miss Heaven’s Glory on the Road to Earth’s Fame

fame

A follow-up from the last post on glory-seeking…

As you know, last night I was in a room with some very powerful people- 3 Members of Parliament, a bestselling author, the producer of a major investigation show, some publishers, and some heads of anti-trafficking initiatives.  Some were there in genuine support of helping women.  Others were just…politicking.

If a politician or band or a writer (or blogger!) or artist or preacher or teacher or coach or home mom or businessman does their job just to gain glory or fame, their doing it for the wrong reason.  Most end up realizing it’s a lonely life, trying to get people to love you.

Here’s the problem and we MUST understand this men:

We seek glory thinking it = intimacy, love, and acceptance.  It doesn’t.

But get this- for those in Christ, glory is the end prize!  When we seek glory, we’re really just searching for heaven.

We’re trying to live like dead men!  We’re getting too far ahead of ourselves and God’s plan for our lives.  We need to back it up.  We need to be patient.  We need to live out one step at a time.

So… rather than seeking glory on earth, seek to love and invest and add value to others.  In this way, you will find, in Christ, the fulfillment you desire.  It will make for living better here-and-now, and it will mean a glorious death  in the ever-after.  Glory-seeking?  Cut it out.  Just love.
